"We need to get back on track soon"

Domenico Tedesco feels that Schalke deserved a point after the 2-1 defeat in Mönchengladbach. Tedesco, alongside home coach Dieter Hecking, analysed the 90 minutes in the Borussia-Park. Attackers Mark Uth and Guido Burgstaller also gave their thoughts, which Schalke04.de have summarised.

Domenico Tedesco:

Nobody is happy with today’s outcome. Some of the recent games have definitely not been good ones, but today wasn’t that bad. Despite the result, we are still heading in the right direction. Our pressing and general game was off in the first 15 minutes, mainly down to Gladbach’s start. They caught us flat-footed from the start. I felt that after this we stabilised ourselves, and after discussing some things at half time, we improved our game in the second half.

Ultimately we didn’t take our chances today. We are missing just a little of bit of the necessary luck you need, for example Yann Sommer was outstanding today. I think that we actually deserved a point. We need to get back some defensive stability and with that some confidence. We want to get ourselves back on track in the next few games, but Porto and Bayern München are two very difficult opponents. We are, however, looking forward to these games. The lads are constantly giving their all, and the mood in training is always good.  If we play like we did today, then I am confident that we will break our duck soon enough

Dieter Hecking:

For the first half an hour, my team didn’t let Schalke into the game. We were awake and won the ball a lot. After that, we lost concentration a bit. We were hesitant at the start of the second half and struggled with Schalke’s physical style of play. In situations like this you need a good goalkeeper and luckily we have that in Yan Sommer. We got ourselves back on track in the second half and overall it was a fantastic performance against very good opposition. I’m very pleased.

Mark Uth:

Of course, this isn’t the start to the season we were hoping for. We give our all, we work hard, we don’t stop running – but sometimes, the luck just isn’t there and that hurts. We need to keep on working and we’ll get over this unlucky patch, I’m sure of it. Our next Bundesliga game is against Bayern, we know it’s not going be easy, but we just have to believe in ourselves.

Guido Burgstaller:

We tried to put Gladbach under pressure in the midfield. We worked hard and had enough chances to get a goal. When we don’t put away our chances, we don’t have the right to complain at the end of the game. We need to get our confidence back in training, win challenges and put the ball in the back of the net – only then will we get back on the right track and start winning games again.
