Not pretty and no icing on the cake, but an important point

RB Leipzig had already scored twelve goals at home this season before facing FC Schalke 04 on Sunday. As well as this, the memories of last season were fresh in the memory as the Royal Blues lost 3-1 in the same ground in January. “It was very stop-start. We wanted to play football. The result was better than last season,” said Domenico Tedesco, whose team took a point back to Gelsenkirchen this time round.

Nachdreher Leipzig

“We obviously did not win any beauty prizes for the performance, but that was not the way we wanted to play,” said Christian Heidel. However, Domenico Tedesco admitted that Schalke were wary of the attacking threat Leipzig have and did not want to be opened up. “When the opportunities to play the ball in dangerous areas came up, we did not make the most of them. This could have been because we were aware of the dangerous RB counter attack,” explained Tedesco. “If we had played differently we would have lost.”

Woodwork hit for the sixth time this season

Christian Heidel added: “Everyone knows how strong RB are when it comes to counter attacking and we wanted to avoid being opened up. We also hit the post. The game was not pleasing to watch. No other team has managed to contain Leipzig like we did.”

Schalke did not create an abundance of openings but they had big chances to take the lead. In the first half, Breel Embolo saw his header go narrowly wide and in the second half, Weston McKennie’s header crashed against the woodwork. This was the sixth time the Royal Blues have hit the woodwork so far this season. “We have not been blessed with luck so far this season,” said Heidel, who was not too unhappy with the result. “A goal would have been the icing on the cake but it unfortunately evaded us today. Despite this, we are happy to come away with

Caligiuri: A point to build on

Caligiuri was also pleased to have taken a share of the spoils. “The most important thing is that we did not lose the game and come home empty handed,” said the midfielder. “It gives us encouragement and something to build on.”

“We want to look at the performances and not the league table,” highlighted Domenico Tedesco. Schalke are currently 15th in the table. Christian Heidel also added: “We are working on making sure our defence is more stable and then we can start to express ourselves a bit more going forward.”
