Omar Mascarell: with passion and full focus

Schalke 04 have a busy week in store, with Sunday’s away match against FC Augsburg followed up by a pair of home games against SC Freiburg and Arminia Bielefeld at the VELTINS-Arena. “The next three games are very important for us. We want to reduce the gap and catch up to the teams ahead of us,” says Omar Mascarell.

The Royal Blues captain said he’s already experienced quite a lot in his footballing career. “But I’ve never had to wait so long for a result,” said the 27 year old. However, the Spaniard isn’t burying his head in the sand. “We can’t lose our belief. I’m convinced that a victory will give us strength and we will be able to string together some successful results. Three points would mean we can clear our heads and lift a weight off our shoulders after the run of bad results.“

Mascarell is also, however, self critical. “Every one of us knows that our current performances aren’t enough to win. We’re playing well in spells, but in almost every game we’re being held back by individual errors that the opposition take advantage of. Especially at set pieces, we’re not alert enough. We need to put a stop to that as soon as possible. Additionally, we’re often conceding a goal in the opening quarter of an hour of matches, so we’re always chasing the game,” said the midfielder. “We have to do better and we have the quality to do so.”

Team working hard for success

As captain, a lot is being asked of Mascarell currently. “I have the task of picking up and motivating my teammates, especially the younger players, so we can give our all in every game and every training session. I can promise that we’re working hard, we’re standing together and we’re very focused. The coach has a good plan for us; we just have to show that for the 90 minutes on the field. We have to go into every game with passion and full focus, and then we’ll taste victory again.
