Omar Mascarell: We are top fit

The goalscorers Amine Harit and Suat Serdar stood out in the 2-1 win over Mainz, but one man who was equally important for the three points was Omar Mascarell. The defensive midfielder broke up a number of attacks, was confident on the ball and ran 12.77km on the pitch. The Spanish ran the most out of any players on matchday 5.

“I’ve always ran a lot on the pitch. It’s no problem for me,” said Mascarell. “We laid the foundations for a running-heavy game in pre-season. The coach made us aware of how important our fitness is. The hard work has certainly paid off so far.” The 26-year-old is satisfied with the start of the season. “Winning three games in a row is a great feeling. It has certainly given us more confidence,” added Mascarell.

It’s a lot easier to give a little bit more when you have the coach’s confidence.

David Wagner is said to have had a great impact on the side after the below-par 2018/19 campaign. “It’s a lot easier to give a little bit more when you have the coach’s confidence. David Wagner and his coaching team have managed to boost the squad’s morale. We have a lot of quality in our team which we are showing at the moment,” reported the Spaniard. “Last year things didn’t go well for me or the team, but that’s done now. We’re looking forwards, not backwards.”

Attentions will now turn to Saturday’s away game at table-toppers Leipzig (28/9). “RB have started really well, but so have we,” said Mascarell, adding “Leipzig are definitely favourites on paper, however anything is possible in football. We have to continue to be compact at the back, play aggressive football and fight as a team.”
