One last time for Sascha Riether

Ahead of kick off on Schalke’s final game of the season against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (18/05), Schalke said goodbye to two players. Whilst Jeffrey Bruma will return to VfL Wolfsburg upon expiry of his loan, Sascha Riether will retire from professional football.

Both players received gifts from the club with memories of their time in Royal Blue. “Many thanks for four fantastic years. Even though I didn’t play a lot, I was always there with all my heart,” said Riether ahead of the game, which was received with rousing applause.

Just under two hours later, fans were celebrating again, as Riether was substituted into the game. The right back, whose previous appearance for the club came exactly two years ago, replaced Daniel Caligiuri in the 88th minute.

Riether had already said goodbye once before

This wasn’t Riether’s first departure from Schalke. After the last home game of the 2016/17 season, the right-back had left the club and said goodbye. However, he then signed a new one-year deal in October 2017, which was then renewed for another year at the end of last season. This showed how important he is for the team.

Jeffrey Bruma wasn’t able to play against VfB Stuttgart. The defender, who signed on loan from VfL Wolfsburg in January, has a problem with his foot. He still attended the game and supported his teammates from the stands. The Dutchman made twelve appearances for the Knappen in all competitions.
