Ralf Fährmann: I can only apologise

We played really well at times today, creating lots of chances. Once again, though, we couldn’t convert and kill the game – we were slightly unlucky in that regard as well. Bremen got back into the game after my mistake and I’m really sorry to the team for that – I can only apologise. The supporters could see that we were not happy with a point after conceding the equaliser, we pushed on straight away to find a winner which we so nearly found when Pjaca hit the post, then it was Bremen who scored the winner with the last kick. The defeat hurts a lot, of course it does, we brought it upon ourselves, but we all know there are days like this. We cannot let this derail us, we need to keep our chins up.

We were better in the second half, had lots of counterattacks, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert any of the chances that came of them. Later in the game we started to make mistakes for which Werder punished us – in the end they had no more than two chances and converted both of them. It’s not Ralf Fährmann’s fault that we lost today, we missed the opportunity to win, all of us. It’s not a setback for us though; we will stay focused and continue on the same track we’ve been on. We will analyse the game and learn from our mistakes.

It’s a painful defeat – we expected a lot from today and were desperate to secure those first points of the year at home. We’re simply gutted that we couldn’t get a result today – we passed up the opportunity to make it 2-0. Our passive attitude and the unfortunate mishap in front of goal allowed Werder back into the game from nowhere. After that it was very difficult for us. We’ve got a lot of work still to do: we need to start showing the absolute desire to win these games.
