Ralf Fährmann: Everyone associated with Schalke deserved better tonight

Despite dominating the match for large periods, Schalke lost 2-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday (19/12). The Royal Blues were frustrated with the unfortunate defeat – especially as it was a night where they were desperate to win for the miners in attendance. schalke04.de has summarised the post-match reactions.

Ralf Fährmann

Domenico Tedesco:

We wanted to put in a great performance to mark this special occasion – but unfortunately didn’t do that. Our first-half display was too sloppy and we deserved to be 2-0 down. We weren’t too bad up until Dominik Kohr’s chance. We didn’t hold the ball up well enough and lost possession on too many occasions. We got some momentum in the second half and controlled the game then. The result is not good enough, but we will just have to accept it. I am obviously slightly worried by the current situation that we find ourselves in. We haven’t lost our heads and have tried to solve things by simply football. As long as the team continues to give their all, I will always defend them.

Heiko Herrlich:

We didn’t have enough tempo in our game in the first 20 minute, but then we were gifted the chance that Dominik Kohr missed. Aleksandar Dragovic’s goal freed us up a bit. The second goal was expertly created against a well set-up defence and was an excellent piece of individual play from Lucas Alario. We knew that they would come out of the break strongly and that it would be a tough task for us. We lost the ball too quickly and thus couldn’t control the game. We had luck on a couple of occasions that they didn’t get an equaliser.

Ralf Fährmann:

I am really sorry about the second goal – I didn’t deal with the shot as I should have. Everyone associated with Schalke in the stadium deserved better tonight, from the miners, to the fans and the players. We have to improve in the next few games. Last year we were so efficient, whereas this year we are completely the opposite – it’s like we are cursed. I can understand why the fans are so frustrated; we are a team who should be doing a lot better. We are in a bad run at the moment, so I think the winter break will do us the world of good. Now we have to give 100% again in Stuttgart on Saturday.

Benjamin Stambouli:

It was a tough game against a good Leverkusen team today. I hope that we can climb the table again after the winter break. We have fought and fought, but sometimes you need a bit of luck in football – which we are missing right now. That is no excuse though. We are a team who fight till the end and will carry on working hard. I’m not looking at the table and I know how much quality we have here.
