Ralf Fährmann: That just wasn’t good enough

Despite a 2-0 lead at half time, Schalke were beaten in Sinsheim on Saturday afternoon by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Both head coaches spoke to the media about the game, while Sead Kolasinac and Ralf Fährmann also discussed the defeat.

Ralf Fährmann

Dimitrios Grammozis:

Our plan worked really well in the first half. We tried to close off their passing lanes, looked to be compact and start attacks by winning the ball back. We had the chance to score a third goal through Amine Harit. Our fight and compactness from the first half wasn’t there in the second. We didn’t win our challenges, didn’t get stuck in and didn’t put the yards in. They then got their goals from set pieces. The lads did a lot of things right in the first half, which were all gone by the second.

Sebastian Hoeneß:

It got quite loud in the dressing room after the first half. I felt that we needed a fresh impetus to play to our absolute best. We didn’t perform badly in the first 45 minutes, but we lacked some precision. Scoring early in the second half obviously helped us. The reaction the team showed was really impressive. The first goal gave us the belief that we could go on and win it.

Sead Kolasinac:

We put in a decent performance in the first half and wanted to avoid conceding at the start of the second half. We then conceded three set-piece goals in a short space of time and gave the game away, which just cannot happen.

Ralf Fährmann:

We defended their set pieces really badly and therefore conceded three goals from them. After that, we had no control of the game and couldn’t put them under any pressure. We played okay in the first half, but poorly after the break – so we deserved to lose. Overall, that just wasn’t good enough.
