Schalke come from behind in Bremen

FC Schalke 04 got their first three points of the season away from home this season in a 2-1 win against Werder Bremen. An own goal in the first half and a late winner from Leon Goretzka sealed the three points following Lamine Sané’s early strike to put the hosts in front.

Tactics and line-up

Head coach Domenico Tedesco made two changes to the team that won 3-1 against VfB Stuttgart. Guido Burgstaller started from the off and Daniel Caligiuri returned to the starting XI. In their place. Nabil Bentaleb and Max Meyer were on the bench. Naldo returned to his ex-club Bremen for the first time in Royal Blue and he received a very warm welcome from the fans in the Weser-Stadion.

Own goal equaliser

Neither the Royal Blues nor the Green-Whites were able to create any true goal-scoring chances in front of goal in the initial stages. However, in the 20th minute, that all changed. Laminé Sane stabbed the ball home from a corner to put Werder 1-0 up but no longer than two minutes past before we were all square once again. Milos Veljkovic scored past his own goalkeeper from a corner to make it 1-1. At the other end, Ralf Fährmann saved from close range after another dangerous Kainz corner to ensure it stayed 1-1 at half-time.

Leon Goretzka makes it 2-1

In the second half, the Knappen began to control the match more and more. The Royal Blues began to raise the tempo. Breel Embolo entered the fray 366 days after his injury and helped to inspire a Schalke winner by causing chaos in the Bremen penalty area. Eventually, the pressure paid off as Leon Goretzka instinctively tapped home from a Caligiuri corner to make it 2-1 to Schalke in the 83rd minute. The goal was to be the winning one as Werder were unable to break the Schalke defence in the time remaining before full-time.

Thoughts on the game

The Royal Blues’ win in a very tightly contested, intense match was well deserved. In the second half, Schalke dominated proceedings and looked more menacing than their opponents. With nine points from four games, Schalke are now third in the Bundesliga table. On Tuesday, Schalke face FC Bayern Munich in the VELTINS-Arena.
