Steven Skrzybski: An amazing day

Domenico Tedesco was beaming after Schalke’s 5-2 win over 1. FC Nürnberg. His opposite number Michael Köllner was obviously disappointed, and had expected more. Steven Skrzybski was perhaps the happiest man of all, after getting a brace on his first start for the club. Guido Burgstaller was also among the goalscorers, coming back to haunt his former club.

Domenico Tedesco:

We’re very happy with the win, it was very important and we worked hard for it. It was a very disjointed game. We simply didn’t defend well. Our resistance against the counter wasn’t good and we sat too deep. The score could have been different at half time. In the second half we had a bit more stability and we won more 50-50s. Because we were winning the ball, we were able to work some chances. We used these and deserved the win in the end.

We’re glad that we scored five goals, and above all the brace for Steven Skrzybski. He always gives his all in training and he’s a great guy. He’s got a great mentality and makes a lot of runs from deep. There are a lot of positives to take from today, but we’re not saying that everything’s perfect. There’s always something to improve.

Michael Köllner:

We’re obviously bitterly disappointed. Until just before the end, it was a game which both teams deserved to take something from. We also missed several good chances to go 1-0 up on the counter attack at the beginning of the game. The team did well after going 2-0 down, as well, and our first goal was deserved. We were still in the game in the second half, but it’s hard to create anything against Schalke with ten men. From a neutral point of view, it was a thrilling, intense game. The fans gave it a party atmosphere – it was top from both sides. Thank you to everyone who gave the game this feel today.

Steven Skrzybski:

It was an amazing day, I’m ecstatic that we won. The three points are massively important for us in our current situation. Scoring two goals is the icing on the cake. The boss put his faith in me and I wanted to repay him. I really enjoyed the moments after I scored my first goal. I’m not someone who likes to be the centre of attention, so I was glad that all the boys were there and we could celebrate together. Despite the two goals, there are still things that I could have done better. I’ll work hard on myself so that today isn’t just a one-off.

Guido Burgstaller:

Five goals in one game – it feels good and it gives us confidence for the upcoming games. The interplay with Steven Skrzybski was really good. Things worked really well as a team today. I didn’t really celebrate my goal. Firstly, I wanted to wait and see whether the referee was going to give offside, and secondly I used to play for 1. FC Nürnberg. I had a wonderful time there. It wouldn’t have been respectful to the fans if I’d have gone crazy celebrating. We absolutely deserved our win. The goals we conceded were unnecessary but made it exciting.
