Suat Serdar: We had the chance to win

Schalke fought right up until the final whistle against Freiburg on Saturday (21/12), but couldn’t find the winning goal. The players and coach were frustrated with the soft goals S04 conceded, but stressed their happiness with the Hinrunde overall.

Suat Serdar

David Wagner:

It was a great game of football, which you don’t always expect in the final match of the Hinrunde. Unfortunately we’ve got a bitter taste in our mouths, as we didn’t concede many chances apart from the penalties and still only took a point. The lads fought back amazingly and carried on pushing for a third goal once we’d equalised. You don’t always get what you deserve in football. We’ll take the point.

Christian Streich:

We had to catch our breath for a day or so after the Bayern game. I’m pleased that we were able to put everything into today’s game against a strong and well-structured Schalke side. They could obviously have won the game, but we could equally have come out 3-1 winners as we had good chances to win the game. It was a fantastic match.

Suat Serdar:

Ozan won the ball back brilliantly and we broke quickly on the counter. I was so desperate to score the goal, I think you could see that. Benito played a great pass, I just had to stick it in. We have to be a bit cleverer in our own box. Both penalties were unnecessary. We were very aggressive and you can’t be like in the Bundesliga. We could have made it 3-2, but unfortunately we couldn’t find a winning goal. It was a great Hinrunde, which all Schalke fans can be pleased about. We want to carry this on next year.

Bastian Oczipka:

We were the better team – Freiburg only created a few chances. They got two goals from two individual errors. It’s very annoying to throw a game away like that. We can still be happy with our Hinrunde – we would have taken this at the start of the season. The coach has also said that he’s satisfied. Now we can enjoy a few days off and do it all over again in the Rückrunde.
