Suat Serdar: Everybody fights for one another

David Wagner felt his side was slightly lucky to pick up a 2-1 win over Mainz after a below-par second-half performance. Mainz coach Sandro Schwarz was frustrated that his team failed to take anything from the game after Amine Harit’s moment of magic. Suat Serdar and Benjamin Stambouli also gave their thoughts after the game.

David Wagner:

I think we started the game well. We played okay in the first half and we were good value for our lead. We set up with a 4-3-3 and looked to keep the ball against their diamond. It worked well and we won a lot of second balls. The second half wasn’t good enough for 40 minutes. We lost possession too much and were nervous. There wasn’t any room for us to gegenpress as we lost the ball too quickly. Mainz played well and deservedly got their equaliser. There was a lot of energy in the stadium in the last five minutes and the Nordkurve really played its part. I could really sense the belief that we could win the game – and we managed to do so thanks to Amine. We were lucky to win the game, as it wasn’t a particularly great performance. Good luck to the Zerofivers for their next few games.

Sandro Schwarz:

Well done to David Wagner and his team. It was game of two halves today. Schalke started the game better, fought hard and made a few chances for themselves. We didn’t make enough from our chances on the break in the first period and weren’t precise enough. We controlled up to 40 minutes of the second half. We found space where we wanted to play the ball into. We eventually found the equaliser, but it’s so frustrating to lose the game after such a brilliant piece of play by Amine Harit.

Suat Serdar:

We’re happy that we could keep the three points in Gelsenkirchen. The fact I scored makes me very happy. Amine Harit’s assist was brilliant. We’re playing very well together, it’s fun to be out there on the pitch. It was a hard-fought win in the end. We shouldn’t have let them back in the game. But as a team, we managed to find the right response to the equaliser. We fought back, everyone for each other. You saw that after the equaliser. I’m just really happy that we have started with ten points. But we can’t relax now. Next week we have Leipzig and we want to get a result.

Benjamin Stambouli:

We never stopped believing in the win. But at full time, we all knew that it wasn’t a good performance from us in the second half. We got three points, that was the most important thing, but I know we can play better. That’s why I’m not completely satisfied despite the win. Ultimately, we have Amine to thank.
