Suat Serdar: We should have seen the win out

Schalke were just seconds away from a fifth straight win in the Bundesliga. Coaches David Wagner and Achim Beierlorzer both agreed that a draw was a fair result. Suat Serdar was frustrated that S04 failed to add a second goal to seal the win. Alexander Nübel also gave his opinion on the frustrating draw.

David Wagner:

It’s obviously disappointing to concede an equaliser in injury time. I can forget about disappointment as quickly as I can move on from euphoria. I think a draw was a fair result though. We weren’t good enough in the first 45 and didn’t have enough possession. The second half was a lot better though. We should have been more clinical though. We had chances to seal the win late on, but were too sloppy in front of goal.

We also have to admit that Köln had their chances. It helps when you have an outstanding keeper. Alex made some super saves tonight. Even though we’d rather have won, we will take the point. We saw that we’re capable of putting in a good second-half display despite not playing well in the first half of a game.

Achim Beierlorzer:

This is a really important point and we deserved to win it. We’re really pleased. It’s great that our team is still believing in their qualities despite the start to the season we’ve had. I was pleased with what I saw today. We defended as one. Simon Terrode pressed their defence well and Jonas Hector was calm in midfield. I’m also pleased with Noah Katterbach who showed how much talent he has today. This result is an important step in the right direction.

Suat Serdar:

We needed to wrap it up in the closing stages. We had the chances to score a second or even a third. It definitely should have been three points, instead we only get one. It really hurts to concede a goal in injury time. Especially because we dominated for most of the second half. Köln didn’t give much away in the first half, they kept the space very tight.

Alexander Nübel:

It’s tough going when you concede a goal in injury time that costs you two points. It hurts. But that’s part of the game, we have to learn from it. Overall, it was an even game. We weren’t so good in the first half, but we had good chances in the second. It was a really good performance from us after the break. After we scored the deserved opener we could have added more. The fact we could have gone top didn’t mean anything.
