“It’s when things aren’t going so well that a club proves its worth”

It hasn’t been the start to the season that Christian Heidel was hoping for. However, the sporting director is staying positive. schalke04.de spoke to the 55-year-old about the defeat in Mönchengladbach, the current goal drought, support from the fans, and the upcoming Champions League fixture against FC Porto.

Christian Heidel on…

…Gladbach’s early goal:
It wasn’t the start we were hoping for. When you concede after three minutes, your pre-prepared game plan is thrown out the window. We conceded from a corner again, that kind of thing hardly happened to us last season.

…missed chances:
There were moments when we just couldn’t get the ball over the line. Statistically, we had more chances than Mönchengladbach. We had the game under control between the 25th and 65th minutes and had several chances to level the score at 1-1. Sadly, Yan Sommer kept these chances out. I don’t hold anything against a player if they miss a chance. However, football is all about putting away chances – Mönchengladbach did that, we didn’t.

We didn’t start well and our job now is to correct that

Christian Heidel

…the start to the season:
When you get zero points from three games, you can be nothing else but disappointed. We can’t make excuses. We didn’t start well and our job now is to correct that. However, we’re not going to start panicking after these defeats. We just need to stay calm and keep working hard.

…Domenico Tedesco:
Our coach is doing his job just as well as he did last season when we finished in 4th place. Currently, the results just aren’t there. I’m convinced we will start getting positive results soon though.

…support from the fans:
I have always said that a club shows it’s worth when things aren’t going so well on the pitch. It’s fantastic how the fans continue to back us despite these defeats. They understand our situation.

…upcoming fixture against Porto:
I’m happy that I’ll be able to hear the Champions League hymn playing in the stadium for the first time. Up to now, I have only followed the Champions League games from home. The same goes for Domenico Tedesco and the squad. Therefore the boys should look forward to the game against Porto. The team earned their spot in this competition through their great performances last season.
