Max Meyer: We’ll enjoy it today, but that’s it

We get the reaction from the coach and the players after Schalke’s 2-0 win over Hamburg that took the Royal Blues to second in the Bundesliga table.

Max Meyer im Duell mit Aaron Hunt vom Hamburger SV.

Daniel Caligiuri:

It was a tough match, as expected. Hamburg stood very firm at the back and defended well from the front. They wanted to provide danger on the counter with their quick players. After the problems at the start we got a good grip on the game. It was difficult to find solutions. But I think overall the 2-0 win is a very fair result. The goal gave us composure again. In that situation I felt like I should go forward. The space opened up for me. In the end, Burgi took advantage of it clinically. Today we will enjoy the win, but from tomorrow we switch our focus to BVB. Everyone knows what this game means.

Max Meyer:

It was a difficult match. It looks like a comfortable enough win on the scoresheet, but it was very different out there on the pitch. Hamburg got stuck in and were dangerous going forward. They’re a lot further down the table than they deserve to be in my opinion, and we kept that in our heads going into the game. It was a dogged start, but we soon started to get more control over the game. We know that we’re strong at the back and are clinical with our chances at the moment. Sitting second is a great to enjoy today, but nothing more. It’s the result of hard work, but it doesn’t mean anything at this stage. The league is incredibly tight and it could all look very different in a matter of weeks, so we have to continue in the same vein and push on. If we can do that, we could be in and around the top of the table come the end of the season.

Guido Burgstaller:

I don’t know how Calli did what he did before the second goal (laughs). But joking aside, he often produces moments like that. It was a great run and then Kono had the presence of mind to pick me out, and I simply had to slot it in. Hamburg made life difficult for us throughout the game today though. They were strong in the tackle and were incisive on the ball. We ought to have calmed the game down a little after our opener and HSV had one or two counter attacks that were just lacking that final ball. That makes it even better to have scored two goals and kept a clean sheet. We will be fully focused on Dortmund in the next week; we’ll be going over our tactical approach and will prepare ourselves as best we can. It’s fantastic to celebrate a win with the fans going into a big game like that.
