Alexander Nübel: “I really enjoyed tonight”

The only thing missing for Domenico Tedesco’s men tonight was the goal. Despite a number of missed opportunities, the Schalke head coach was pleased with his team’s performance, which Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim was also quick to acknowledge. Alexander Nübel was delighted to make his debut in European competition and Mark Uth discussed his position. schalke04.de has summarised all the interviews.

Domenico Tedesco:

„I always try to remain positive – which is why I can recognise my team’s good performance and I am not focusing on not getting the win. We knew before the game that there would be a tremendous atmosphere here. Players are always going to take a few minutes to adapt to this. Once we did that, we got into the game well. We were dominant tonight, it was fun to watch. The only thing missing tonight was a goal. We had plenty of chances to score as well; we need to carry on working on this. If we can combine this kind of performance with some better finishing, we will start getting positive results again. Ultimately we are satisfied with the point, even though we deserved the win. The group is still wide open after three games; anyone can beat anyone in my opinion.

Fatih Terim:

We are happy with the point in the end. Normally I want to win every game – but tonight a draw was a good result. They were the better team in the second half and we lost the ball too much, which of course we were punished for. They had some very good chances to win it. We still have a good chance to achieve our goals in this group and I think it’ll be very tight right up until the end.

Alexander Nübel:

I’m very satisfied with my Champions League debut. I was really looking forward to the match tonight and really enjoyed the evening. This is one of the loudest stadiums in Europe and we were not put off by the atmosphere, instead using it in our favour. We played really well tonight and were patient. The Galatasaray players never knew what to do when we had the ball. Consequently, it is a shame we didn’t reward ourselves with all three points. We had to score at least one goal and then we would’ve won. My head is fine, that’s what I’m there to do. We were able to control the volume of the crowd by being resolute in defence and it was extremely loud. It is an unbelievable experience. It is brutal to hear the Galatasaray fans whistling whenever we had the ball.

Mark Uth:

I enjoyed playing in my new, slightly deeper role as an attacking midfielder. Of course I had a couple of problems at the start defensively and I had to find my way into the match. Personally, it was good whenever we turned defence into attack and I was able to play deep balls to play others in behind the Galatasaray defence. I think this worked well. The coach will decide whether or not I will continue to occupy this role. We wanted to have more ball possession tonight, play more patiently and operate down the flanks whenever the opposition full backs had pressed forwards. I had a lot of fun despite it being a very intensive match and atmosphere in the stadium. We played very well but were unfortunately unable to find the breakthrough. Especially in the first few minutes, it was crazy with all the whistles whenever we were in possession. However, we didn’t let the occasion nor the atmosphere get to us and we played our style of football.
