“It was only a matter of time”

Domenico Tedesco was buzzing after the late winner in the RZD Arena. At the post-match press conference the head coach reflected on his first ever win in the Champions League. Juri Sjomin, Lokomotiv Moscow head coach, also analysed the first 90 minutes. Three other Royal Blues gave their opinions, including goalscorer Weston McKennie. schalke04.de has summarised the thoughts.

Domenico Tedesco:

It was only a matter of time until we scored in the second half. We applied of lot pressure and were on top. Weston topped off his excellent performance with the goal. He may not be the biggest, but he can jump very high and directed the header well.

Away games in the Champions League are somewhat more difficult as you have generally have to travel a lot further. We got the job done tonight. They have a very experienced and clever team, so we’re happy to have won this game, especially as the first half was quite turgid. To win against Mainz and now again today has done the team the world of good, particularly when we haven’t conceded.

Juri Sjomin:

We played well before the break and had chances to score, but Schalke were better in the second half. It’s very annoying to concede a late goal like that, particularly when it was poor defending from us. It was our fault that we lost this game.

Weston McKennie:

Today was a dream come true for me, it was truly amazing. I don’t score a lot of goals but I’m so pleased I managed to get one today. We managed to control the game after half time and finally got our reward. My celebration with Salif Sané wasn’t planned but we greet one another like this every day so we did it after my goal. We are very happy and relieved. The schedule is so busy that we don’t have much time to think about tonight. We have to concentrate on the game against Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga now. We won as a team today.

Mark Uth:

We are delighted with the win. We upped our game in the second half, creating more chances and deserved to win. We did not play that well in the first 45 minutes. What I must say to the fans, is that we must stay patient before we get the first goal. I had a few chances and worked hard but it did not fall my way. I will continue to give my all and keep trying until it falls in place.

Naldo:

We played much better in the second half. The coach said a few things at the break and we won back possession better. I am delighted for Weston, he works hard every day to try and get better. You can see the improvements in his performances and he was rewarded with a goal today. He is important for our team. The win against Mainz relieved some of the pressure on us and allowed us to play with more freedom.
