Nine home games undefeated

S04 are unbeaten in nine home games in European competition (six wins, three wins.) However, the Royal Blues have not won their last five clashes with English clubs (two draws, three losses). Schalke last beat an English team at home in October 2001, a 3-1 win again versus Arsenal in the Champions League.

Going beyond the round of 16

The Royal Blues have reached the quarter finals from this stage of the competition on their last three tries. In the 2010/11 season, Schalke reached the semi-finals, going out to City’s biggest rivals, Manchester United.

City no strangers to the knockout stages

Manchester City find themselves in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the sixth time. The Cityzens have advanced beyond the round of 16 in two of their last three times. Last year, Pep Guardiola’s side went out in the quarter finals to eventual finalists, Liverpool FC. Their best performance in the Champions League to date is reaching the semi finals in the 2015/16 season.

Homecomings for Sané and Gündogan, Nastasic and Matondo face their former club

Leroy Sané came through the Schalke academy and turned professional at the club. The Germany international made 47 Bundesliga appearances, scoring eleven goals, before moving to England in summer 2016. Ilkay Gündogan also has Schalke roots. Born in Gelsenkirchen, Gündogan played for the Schalke U9s. There are two former Cityzens in the Schalke squad, in the shape of Matija Nastasic and Rabbi Matondo. Nastasic made 34 Premier League appearances for City between September 2012 and August 2014, while Matondo was a Sky Blue between July 2016 and January 2019, although he never made a first-team appearance for the club.

Kompany has experience playing Schalke

The two teams last met in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, with City progressing to the next stage of the competition 2-0. Belgian Vincent Kompany played the full 90 minutes for the Sky Blues. He is the only player who both played in that match and is still active for his current club.
