Alessandro Schöpf: A small step in the right direction

FC Schalke 04 progressed to the next round of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday (3/11) with a 4-1 win over 1. FC Schweinfurt. Head coaches Manuel Baum and Tobias Strobl gave their thoughts after the final whistle, while Alessandro Schöpf and Steven Skrzybski also spoke to the media.

Manuel Baum:

It was a classic cup battle. Schweinfurt were really motivated and we were really tense in our build-up play. They pressed us really high, so there would have been a lot of space in and behind them, but we didn’t make use of that. They almost exclusively used long balls, so there were lots of one-on-ones in defence. They made life tough for us. Registering a win will be really good for us. We came from behind, Ralf Fährmann saved a penalty and we scored four goals.

Tobias Strobl:

We wanted to play with courage to pull off a shock result. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage it. We knew that Schalke were lacking confidence and we didn’t want to give them any sense of security. After going 1-0 up, we had the feeling that we had something to lose, and that’s sadly what happened. We made a simple error before the equaliser, and I’m also not pleased with the second goal we conceded. I still had hope up to 3-1 that we could turn the game around. Despite the defeat, we can be really proud of ourselves.

Alessandro Schöpf:

It was a hard-fought win. Schweinfurt were really good in the first half and Ralle’s penalty save was a key moment. I’m pleased that I could help the team with the two goals. Today was a small step in the right direction, but we know that we will need to do more against Mainz.

Steven Skrzybski:

We weren’t good in the first half. We needed a while to find our way in the game. We managed to fight our way into it and I think, on balance, it’s a deserved victory because of our performance in the second half. But it was all hard work. We’re really pleased that Ralle saved the penalty at 2-1 – that was so important.
