Janik Bachmann: We can build on this

Despite a strong improvement after the break, FC Schalke 04 lost 3-0 to FC Augsburg on Tuesday evening (29/10) and were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal. After full time, S04 Head coach Kees van Wonderen, Janik Bachmann and FCA head coach Jess Thorup spoke about the game, and schalke04.de summarised the key quotes.

Kees van Wonderen:

Defeats are always tough to take, but the lads presented themselves well today. Of course, we had a phase in the first half in which we made things difficult for ourselves against a Bundesliga side, but after the break we gave it our all and were closer to an equaliser than Augsburg were to a second. 3-0 is too high a scoreline for me, but we made our opponents very uncomfortable over a long period in the second half. These are the first steps on the path we want to go on: we want to give everything for each other, help one another and invest everything to be successful.

Jess Thorup:

I was pleased with our first half and went into the changing room at half time with a good feeling. We wanted to continue controlling the game and score more goals to put the game to bed early. I was then disappointed by large parts of the second half. We weren’t good on the ball, or in the tackle, and that allowed our opposition back into the game. Our goal today was to progress through to the next round, and I’m pleased with our deserved victory, but or performance after the break was not what I was hoping for.

Janik Bachmann:

We were a bit too passive in the first half. We wanted to defend well, but we allowed them too many chances. After the break, we wanted to give it our all and put Augsburg under pressure, and we did that really well up to the 85th minute. It’s a shame we ended up losing 3-0, but we can build on it and go to Ulm in good spirits. We were tight to our man, didn’t allow them anything, but we also need to play out our chances better in order to get our reward. Our complete focus now turns to the league and we want to pick up three points on Friday.
