S04 through to the second round of the DFB-Pokal after 3-1 win in Braunschweig

FC Schalke 04 booked their place in the next round of the DFB-Pokal on Friday night (11/8). The Royal Blues won 3-1 away to fellow 2. Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Braunschweig thanks to goals from Kenan Karaman (19’), Paul Seguin (42’) and Danny Latza (90+4’).

Matriciani starts at left-back

Thomas Ouwejan was missing in Braunschweig due to a calf problem. He was replaced at left-back by Henning Matriciani. The other change from the 3-0 win over 1. FC Kaierslautern saw Paul Seguin come in for Assan Ouédraogo in central midfield.

Karaman and Seguin on the scoresheet

The hosts had the first chance of the evening, with Marius Müller doing well to push a header from Robin Krauße over the bar (5’). At the other end, Simon Terodde was brought down by goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann in the box as he raced onto a Paul Seguin ball, but the flag went up for offside and Braunschweig were awarded a free-kick instead of a penalty for Schalke (8’).

Eintracht took the lead in the 12th minute after Timo Baumgartl’s short back pass to Marius Müller. The goalkeeper didn’t fully commit to his tackle on Fabio Kaufmann, looking to avoid giving away a penalty, and the ball fell to Anthony Ujah. He lifted the ball over Müller and curled it home for 1-0.

Thomas Reis’ side found an immediate response to going behind thanks to Kenan Karaman. The Turkey international slid in at the back post to stab Paul Seguin’s free-kick over the line. The ball in had been inadvertently flicked on by Ujah towards Schalke’s striker (19’).

Chances were few and far between following the equaliser, though referee Patrick Ittrich was kept on his toes with the challenges flying in from both sides. The next opportunity came in the 33rd minute and it was for the home team. Krauße chested the ball down to Jan-Hendrik Marx on the edge and his sweetly timed strike flew into the arms of Marius Müller. With three minutes to go until the interval, the visitors took the lead. Following a one-two between Cedric Brunner and Dominick Drexler, Paul Seguin hammered the ball into the top corner at the near post to send S04 in 2-1 to the good.

Slow second half culminates in Latza goal and two red cards

The home side looked to put the pressure on in the second half, but Marius Müller wasn’t really called upon thanks to good work from his defenders. On the other hand though, the Knappen also struggled to test out the Braunschweig goalkeeper, with a lot of play coming in the middle of the park in a turgid affair.

Substitute Bryan Lasme had the first chance of the second half and almost made it 3-1 (74’). Karaman played him in behind the Eintracht defence, only for the Frenchman to see his effort well saved by Hoffmann’s legs. With three minutes left of regulation time, Lasme put an enticing ball across the box, but Karaman couldn’t get on the end of it, only failing to connect by a few centimeters.

Müller was required to preserve S04’s lead in the 89th minute as he rushed off his line to deny Hayan Philippe after he was slipped in behind. Another one of Reis’ substitutes, Danny Latza, was the man to seal the win. He squeezed a shot underneath the goalkeeper after a pass from Latza (90+4’).

Braunschweig defender Sebastian Griesbeck had been sent off for a second bookable offence two minutes before Latza’s goal after a foul on Polter. The referee evened things up just seconds before the final whistle, showing Lino Tempelmann a second yellow for fouling Keita Endo.

Back to Braunschweig

Both teams will face off again next weekend in the second division. The matchday 3 clash will be played on Sunday (20/8) at 13:30 CEST, again at the Eintracht-Stadion in Braunschweig.
