Bryan Lasme: Such a great feeling

Bryan Lasme’s effort in the 107th minute of Sunday’s (17/8) game against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig snuck into the bottom left corner and ultimately secured the victory required to take FC Schalke 04 into the second round of the DFB-Pokal. “I’m so happy to have scored the winning goal and that I was able to help the team in this way,” said the Frenchman, who was brought on in the 80th minute of the game at the Bruno-Plache-Stadion and went on to break the deadlock.

After coming off the bench, the striker brought a new attacking momentum for Schalke. Even before scoring the only goal of the game, Lasme had two good chances. In the 95th minute, it was only a decisive deflection from the heel of Leipzig defender Laurin von Piechowski that put an attempt just wide of the left post. Lasme’s next opportunity came just before the end of the first half of extra time, with Lok’s keeper Andreas Naumann tipping the ball onto the right post to deny Schalke the lead.

“Leipzig’s keeper reacted brilliantly multiple times,” said Lasme, who didn’t only reflect on his own opportunities. “We started well in the game and could have scored one or two goals in the first 30 minutes.” As half time approached, the visitors also had multiple opportunities, all of which were denied by Justin Heekeren. The goalscorer, who was honoured as the DFB’s Man of the Match, made sure to recognise the excellent performance from Schalke’s keeper: “Justin played a great game as well.”

All in all, it was no easy outing for the Knappen, and Lasme even described it as a typical DFB-Pokal game. “When the ball finally went in, it was such a great feeling.” The forward is determined to help the team even more in the upcoming fixtures. “The coach has shown that he believes in me, and I want to pay back his trust.”
