David Wagner: A great performance

First game of the season, first win. Head coach David Wagner, as well as goalscorers Daniel Caligiuri and Guido Burgstaller, were all satisfied after the 5-0 win over SV Drochtersen/Assel. schalke04.de has summarised their post-match thoughts, as well as those of Drochtersen/Assel coach Lars Uder.

David Wagner:

It was an extremely difficult game for us. We knew that they would be extremely well organised today. Several big teams have come here in the past and struggled too. It was a good performance by us. SV Drochtersen/Assel fought with a lot of passion, but our lads were well up for the fight. We played in the right areas of the pitch in the first half and could have gone ahead when Amine hit the post early on. Taking the lead just before the break was also very important. We got our rewards in the second half.

Lars Uder:

We played a lot better in the first half than we did in the second. Perhaps we could have had a bit more luck on the break, which would have kept the game alive for a lot longer. I think you could see the difference between the two sides by the end. Schalke were fantastic today.

Daniel Caligiuri:

Wins always do us the world of good. It was quite difficult for us in the first few minutes, although that’s normal for a cup game. Once we’d scored two goals, we finished the job off brilliantly. Nevertheless, well done to our opponents. Drochtersen played really well and showed why Bayern struggled here last year so much.

Guido Burgstaller:

The first half was horrible. They had everyone behind the ball, but we still almost went ahead early in the game. Amine was unlucky with his long-range effort. Steven Skrzybski’s goal in the 44th minute was vital – we really needed that. The second-half performance was excellent. We worked hard and showed that our heads are free and clear. I think we are on the right path and we still have a few players to return to the team too.
