Two of the teams in the draw are still to be determined, with the second-round matches between Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt and Holstein Kiel and Bayern München yet to take place. Both games were rescheduled for the new year after talks with the DFB.

In contrast with the first two rounds, the teams in the round of 16 will all be drawn from one pot. The team drawn first in each tie will play the match at home, with just one exception; as the last remaining amateur team, Regionalliga side Rot-Weiss Essen will enjoy home advantage regardless.

The last 16 matches will take place on 2nd and 3rd February, with the quarterfinals on 2nd and 3rd March. The semi-finals are scheduled for 1st and 2nd May with the final to be played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on 13th May.
