Guido Burgstaller: I didn’t think about it

Delight all-round after Schalke’s win tonight took them to the semi-final stage of the DFB-Pokal. We spoke to Domenico Tedesco, Guido Burgstaller, Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka.

Guido Burgstaller:

In terms of my goal, I didn’t think about it too much. I initially turned back to square it to Marko Pjaca but the defender had him covered so I went alone. The ball went in so happy days! In the first half, we could have scored another and we need to kill off games more in future. All in all though, it was a deserved win. We really wanted to progress. Now, we’re one game away from the final. Anything’s possible.

Max Meyer:

It’s a big win for us. We know we slipped up on Saturday. For large parts of the Werder game we were the better team but we lost. We wanted to put that right tonight as we were two games away from Berlin. Now, it’s one. I think we deserved to win. We didn’t let Wolfsburg into the game whatsoever. Aside from when they hit the bar, I can’t think of any other chances they had. We should have added to our lead. We fought hard with the fans behind us and we’re rightfully in the semi-finals. We know we’re one step away from Berlin. We’re all dreaming and it’d be something very special for the club.

Leon Goretzka:

Reaching the semis feels great. It was hard work. We worked every well off the ball but so far we’ve struggled to turn winning possession back into scoring goals. If we’d have done that, tonight would have been less tense. However, it’s great to win. We played well on the break throughout and now we just have to work on scoring more goals. I’m sure we’ll manage it soon.

Domenico Tedesco:

We learnt from our Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg. Back then, we lost too many battles on the pitch and conceded an equaliser in stoppage time. This time we were tougher in the middle of the park, closed down the space and pressed our opponents into mistakes. In the first half, we failed to score a second after Burgstaller’s fantastic goal. We need to work on that and we will. We know it’s a flaw in our game right now.

However, I’m very happy to have achieved our goal and got our deserved win. We played very well in the first half and to be part of the last four in the DFB-Pokal is a great feeling to have. Yet, there are still three very strong sides left in the competition. I don’t have a dream draw.

From tomorrow, our focus is entirely on FC Bayern. Like any Bundesliga game, it’ll be tough. We’ll head to the Allianz and try our very best to take something from the game.
