Miron Muslic: A typical cup game

FC Schalke 04 won 1-0 at the Bruno-Plache-Stadion on Sunday (17/8) in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. After the clash that went all the way to extra time with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, head coach Miron Muslic and his opposite number Jochen Seitz discussed the game at the post-match press conference. Captain Kenan Karaman also spoke to the media.

Miron Muslic clapping on the touchline

Miron Muslic:

Our aim was to reach the next round and we managed to do that. We knew before the game that today would be a real test. We created some really good chances in the first 25 minutes and should have taken the lead to make our lives easier. They then had good opportunities to score in the minutes leading up to half time. We were a little bit sloppy during that spell. The game was then totally open in the second half. It was a typical cup game, one where an individual moment could decide the outcome. We didn’t manage to impose ourselves on the match as much as we’d hoped to. We did well in extra time and created several good chances, which I was pleased about. Leipzig’s goalkeeper had a great afternoon and saved almost every shot he faced, aside from the one goal we managed to score.

Jochen Seitz:

I’m proud of the fight my team showed – that’s exactly what I told the lads after the final whistle. They gave everything out there. It took us around 25 minutes to really get into the game, and in that spell we had to survive one or two dangerous moments. After that, though, we played outstanding brilliantly, but unfortunately didn’t reward ourselves with a goal from our chances. Maybe one or two players were a little nervous in front of goal, especially coming up against a second-division side. In the final third, we sometimes lacked that extra bit of precision or made the wrong decision. We should have defended better for their goal in extra time. In the end, it’s the fine margins that a team like FC Schalke 04 know how to exploit. Towards the end, we no longer had the energy to cause any real danger.

Kenan Karaman:

We knew it was going to be a tough game. It was a typical first-round DFB-Pokal tie against a highly motivated opponent. We had some good chances that we unfortunately didn’t take, and when you don’t score yourself it naturally gives the opposition a lift. Thankfully, we rewarded ourselves in extra time and achieved our aim of reaching the second round. For me personally, it was my first 90-minute outing in more than three months, and I coped well with the workload.
