Tobias Mohr: Goals and assists are good, but the team always comes first

Tobias Mohr has already registered four goal contributions in only three matches so far this season. After bagging in FC Schalke 04’s first game of the season against Eintracht Braunschweig and setting up Ibrahima Cissé's opener in the defeat to Nürnberg, the midfielder added another goal and assist to his tally in the Royal Blues’ win over VfR Aalen.

Just after the half-an-hour mark in the first-round DFB-Pokal clash, Mohr swung a free-kick into the box that captain Kenan Karaman met powerfully to give S04 the lead. The 28-year-old all but sealed the deal for the Royal Blues in the second 45 with a shot that nutmegged VfR keeper Andreas Wick.

“Every goal and assist is good. It gives you confidence as a player,” said Mohr. “I hope I can keep it up over the coming weeks.” The midfielder went on to explain that the most important thing for him was that Schalke came away from Aalen with a 2-0 win. In his words: “It’s the fact that we won and that we’re in the second round. The team always comes first.”

High praise for Aalen

Mohr noted that, for the most part, the Royal Blues controlled the cup clash, though he praised the opposition’s performance. “Playing against a team from a lower division isn’t always easy. Full credit to Aalen – they were well-organised and kept things compact.” Mohr explained that, after the second goal, the game was as good as over. “At the end of the day, we let a couple of chances go begging. We definitely could’ve scored another goal in the closing stages.”
