Paul Seguin: Whenever my brother comes to watch me play, I end up scoring

After providing the assist for FC Schalke 04’s opening goal and then scoring himself later in the match, Paul Seguin deservedly took home the Man of the Match award after the 3-2 win against Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday evening (11/8). “We looked very settled on the pitch and were ready to take on the fight,” the midfielder said. “That’s why we deservedly won and have advanced to the next round.”

The 28-year-old acknowledged that, despite the 3-1 win, “There’s still room for improvement. We’re have a newly-formed squad and are still working on getting our routines down. That takes time, which is normal.”

There’s still room for improvement.

Paul Seguin

The work the Royal Blues have been putting in on the training pitch paid off in the 42nd minute, as Seguin scored the best goal of the night after a well-worked team move. After receiving the ball from Cedric Brunner, Seguin rifled a shot under the bar to put Schalke 2-1 up. “It was a great assist from Cedric Brunner, so I need to thank him for that,” the midfielder said about his strike.

Seguin straight away looked to find his brother in the stands. “It’s strange, every time that Maik comes to watch me play, I score,” he said with a grin. “He needs to come to every game!”

Not at 100% just yet

Despite being involved in two goals against Braunschweig, Seguin still doesn’t think that he’s reached the limits of his potential yet. “Pre-season wasn’t easy for me, because I was carrying a minor injury still,” the Magdeburg native shared. “But, I’m on the right path. This goal will definitely help me to continue improving. My goal is to help the team in every game.”

Schalke won’t have to wait long before they come up against Braunschweig again, with their next meeting set to take place on Sunday in the league (20/8). “It’s definitely unusual,” Seguin said about the schedule, adding that this weekend’s result will have no impact on the upcoming game. “We will analyse the cup game in order to best prepare for the league meeting. I assume that Braunschweig will go with a different tactical approach. In the end, we need to focus on ourselves. If we play the way we know we’re capable of, then we will be able to win away at Eintracht again.”
