Tedesco: We came back into the game through persistance and strong mentality

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

It was a tough game, like we expected, against a very strong opponent. We expected that they would press us high and get in our faces. It was a close game that both teams could have won. We had a few good chances in the first half. The players that came off the bench also made a good impact which shows how together the team is and how they all identify with each other. We did not use the counter attack very well today, if we had counter attacked better we could have scored three or four goals.

Markus Anfang:

It was very harsh on us to lose the game on penalties. The lads played really well tonight. We were the better team in the majority of the game but did not take our chances. We kept on trying to win the game, even against a team of such quality as Schalke. We will take the positives from the game, such as the fact we played really good football.

Mark Uth:

I am delighted, not only for myself but also the team, and that we have also progressed to the next round. I had imagined my first goal for Schalke to be a bit different than that but it is always nice to help the team out. I knew as soon as I was picked to take a penalty, which corner I would shoot. I will keep working hard and the goals will come. We played well today up until the final ball as we kept making the wrong decisions in attacking areas. We need to keep working on this in training. It was an intense game and the lads gave it their all. To win on penalties gives you a psychological boost and hopefully we can take this into the next Bundesliga game.

Alexander Nübel:

Every goalkeeper is happy when it goes to penalties. We went through Köln’s penalty takers with the coaches so I knew which way the players were going to shoot. However, most of the players decided not to shoot towards their favoured side. I knew which way Höger was going from when we used to train together. We worked hard tonight and got the win through determination, which is what Schalke stands for and were also the foundations of last season’s successes. We are now on the right path and can hopefully we can keep picking up points in the league.
