Christian Gomis: Exactly the right step
Christian Gomis made his first appearance for the Royal Blues in Friday’s (5/9) friendly against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The new signing from Winterthur was named in the starting XI for the 2-0 defeat to the Bundesliga side and put in a committed performance before being substituted after just over an hour.
“Christian has only had two training sessions with us, but he integrated well into the team in his first match,” said head coach Muslic, who noted several promising attacking moves from the team’s new number 7.
For Gomis, the run-out with his new teammates felt good and capped off a busy week. On Monday (1/9), the final day of the transfer window, the forward signed a four-year contract with the Royal Blues. “When my agent told me that FC Schalke 04 wanted to sign me, I was thrilled. It was immediately clear to me that I wanted to make the move, because I’m convinced this step is exactly the right one for me,” explained the Senegal-born player, who spent much of his childhood in Spain before moving with his family to Switzerland as a teenager.
Climbing the leagues
In Switzerland, Gomis steadily worked his way up the leagues in recent years. Thanks in part to his 14 goals in 27 matches, Stade Nyon were promoted to the second tier two years ago, before top-flight side FC Winterthur secured his services ahead of last season. Gomis had already shown his eye for goal in the early weeks of the 2025/26 campaign, scoring four times in six competitive appearances.
When my agent told me that FC Schalke 04 wanted to sign me, I was thrilled. It was immediately clear to me that I wanted to make the move.
Now he will look to continue his scoring run with Schalke, while stressing that there is more to his game than just goals. “Runs in behind, high intensity,” he said, highlighting two further attributes. The 25-year-old also emphasised his flexibility: “I can play through the middle, out wide or in behind the striker. My goal is to help the team – where I do that best is up to the coach. Miron Muslic explained in detail what he expects from me and how I can bring my strengths to the team.”
The newcomer has quickly settled in, thanks to the welcome from his teammates. “It’s a good mix of young and experienced players,” said Gomis. “The quality in the squad is very high. In my position there are several good players, and I like that, because competition makes everyone better.”
Excited for the VELTINS-Arena
Gomis is already looking forward to his first game at the VELTINS-Arena – possibly as soon as Saturday (13/9) against Holstein Kiel. “That would be amazing,” he said. “I’ve never played in front of 60,000 fans in my life. I’ve been working towards a day like that all my life. Those first moments will be crazy, but I’m ready. I won’t put myself under pressure – I’m generally a relaxed guy and just excited for what’s to come.”
The stadium is not completely unfamiliar to him, having watched Schalke games as a child in Spain. “I still remember the time when Raúl wore this shirt. He’s a legend in Spain and a huge role model,” commented Gomis, who chose the number 7 shirt in part because of his idol.
He also knew before signing about the passion and loyalty of the Schalke fans. “It’s incredible,” said the new arrival, who got to meet some supporters after his first training session. Unsurprisingly, his signature was one of the most sought-after among autograph hunters.
