Karel Geraerts: We need to strike a better balance

Karel Geraerts came away from S04’s curtailed pre-season friendly against FC Midtjylland having been pleased by several aspects of his side’s play. However, after the Royal Blues’ 4-2 defeat – called off due to torrential rain in Saalfelden – their head coach knows that there are still plenty of improvements to be made ahead of the new season.

“We still need to strike a better balance in some passages of play,” explained the Belgian. “We need to be more direct and not play too many short passes. On the whole, though, I’m satisfied, especially as we have to bear in mind that our opponents are close to the start of their season. We scored two great goals and played some good football at times.”

Overall, says Geraerts, the team put in a good shift and did many things well. “I said that to the team as well after the game. At the same time, though, I also made pointed out that the goals we conceded shouldn’t have been allowed to happen. We made it too easy for our opponents.”

Of course, with just two and a half weeks of pre-season training under their belts, the team cannot be expected to operate at 100% just yet, explains Geraerts. “We will continue to work, look to improve in every session and take a step forward every day.” Schalke’s next friendly will see them take on Dynamo Kyiv at the Mittersill stadium on Saturday (16:00 CEST), who – like Midtjylland – will soon be involved in Champions League qualifying.
