Blockbuster friendly to celebrate 25 years of the VELTINS-Arena: Real Madrid CF coming to Schalke

FC Schalke 04 will welcome Spanish giants Real Madrid CF to the VELTINS-Arena on Sunday, 16th August as part of the stadium’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. Kick-off is at 17:00 CEST. Members can secure their tickets now at tickets.schalke04.de, with general sale beginning at 14:00 CEST on Friday (31/7).

It promises to be a fitting finale to the Royal Blues’ summer preparations and a memorable way to celebrate the anniversary of Schalke 04’s home as José Mourinho’s Real Madrid side take on Miron Muslic’s team at Berger Feld. It will be one of Mourinho’s first games back in charge of the Spanish giants after the club announced the 63-year-old Portuguese coach’s return in June. The VELTINS-Arena already holds special memories for him, having led FC Porto to victory over AS Monaco in the 2004 Champions League final in Gelsenkirchen.

The fixture, arranged in close cooperation with S04 partner agency Onside Sports GmbH in Hamburg, will be the final friendly before the start of competitive action for both Schalke 04 and Real Madrid CF. The Royal Blues travel to Hallescher FC in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Monday, 24th August, while Real will begin their La Liga campaign after their trip to Schalke. With several members of the Real Madrid squad having reached at least the World Cup semi-finals, a special La Liga provision applies and means the club will not start their league season until a week later.

Frank Baumann, Schalke’s board member for sport, said: “We’re really looking forward to rounding off our summer preparations with a game against opponents of this calibre. At the same time, we’re sure Schalke fans will be just as excited to see a match like this at the VELTINS-Arena. It’s going to be a real celebration of football.”

Tickets for the friendly are available to FC Schalke 04 members now at tickets.schalke04.de, with each member able to purchase up to four tickets. VIP tickets can also be purchased directly through the online shop. General sale will then begin at 14:00 CEST on Friday (31/7).
