S04 head to play 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 – just as they did 90 years ago

Schalke are in action away to third-tier side 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 on Thursday (26/3, 18:00 CET), as the hosts mark the 90th anniversary of their ground, the Riedel Bau Arena im Sachs-Stadion.

For Schweinfurt, the fixture brings a piece of football history back to life. 90 years ago, Schweinfurt and Schalke 04 also met in the opening game at the Sachs-Stadion, with that match on 23rd July 1936 ending in a 2-2 draw. On that occasion, the Royal Blues lined up in front of 15,000 spectators with the likes of Fritz Szepan and Ernst Kuzorra in their side.

Now, with former Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones in the dugout as head coach, the home side are celebrating the stadium’s anniversary. The Knappen, meanwhile, will play the friendly under the guidance of assistant coaches Tim Hoogland and Eddie Lattimore, while several regulars with heavy recent workloads – including captain Kenan Karaman, Ron Schallenberg and Dejan Ljubičić – will remain in Gelsenkirchen to train with assistant coach Adin Osmanbasic and Alexander Storck (Head Fitness Coach).

First minutes for trio

Adrian Gantenbein, Anton Donkor and Christopher Antwi-Adjei are all set to feature after returning to training last week, with the trio now due to get their first minutes on the pitch again. Kevin Müller, Janik Bachmann, Felipe Sanchez, Max Grüger and Christian Gomis are also expected to get extended game time in Schweinfurt. Players from the U23s and U19s will also have the chance to impress, including Max Hauswirth, who was unavailable for Tuesday’s (24/3) Regionalliga rearranged fixture away to SC Paderborn (1-1) due to suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card.
