Moussa Sylla: We have to be ready next week
In the friendly against Sevilla on Saturday (26/7), Schalke’s Moussa Sylla hammered home a powerful spot kick to halve the deficit to 2-1. Despite the eventual 4-2 defeat to the Spanish side, he was satisfied with the performance and with the five weeks of pre-season. Looking forward to the start of 2. Bundesliga action, the striker seemed just as determined as he was from 12 yards.
“It was a good battle,” said Sylla after the friendly against Sevilla, which took place as part of Schalke Day. “Before facing Sevilla, you already know that they’re a good team. Everyone at the stadium saw exactly that.” This made it a valuable experience for the Royal Blues.
This was still the case even though Sylla and his teammates created somewhat fewer chances than in previous matches. Schalke’s number 9 is not too worried, however. “That’s how it is in pre-season, especially when it’s a first appearance at the VELTINS-Arena for a few new players”. The Mali international kept his cool when presented with his best opportunity of the match, though. After a foul on Soufiane El-Faouzi in the box, the forward picked up the ball and smashed it into the net to make it 2-1 in the 59th minute. Now, it’s about “continuing with this energy and keeping up the work”.
That was a good pre-season. We worked very hard and we have to be ready next week.
‘Work’ has been the keyword since the arrival of head coach Miron Muslic. Sylla added: “That was a good pre-season. We worked very hard and we have to be ready next week.” FC Schalke 04 will host Hertha BSC in their first game of the 2. Bundesliga season on Friday (1/8) at 20:30 CEST. Sylla is looking forward to the game, but he predicts a whole new challenge: “It’ll be a different game with a different approach.”
However, one thing Is certain for the 25-year-old, particularly after 80,000 fans flocked to the stadium for Schalke Day: “I know that I come here every day to work for them and show them the best football possible. We play with all our hearts for them.” The many photos and autographs that Sylla gave during the season-opening event should serve as even more motivation ahead of the first matchday. At the end of a long day, the striker spoke about spending Saturday evening with his family, before he switches his focus to the evening game against Hertha.
