Benito Raman: I wanted to be a Schalke player no matter what

Benito Raman was one of the stars of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season as he was involved in 14 of Fortuna Düsseldorf’s goals. Following his transfer to Schalke, the 24-year-old is extremely motivated to start where his performances left off last season. The attacker spoke to schalke04.de regarding his new club, former Belgian players to play for Schalke, his aims for the season and the fans.

Benito Raman on…

… his transfer:

I had a fantastic time at Fortuna Düsseldorf, but I wanted to make the next step up. When I learnt of Schalke’s interest from my agent, I was raring to go. Therefore, I set my sights on it and decided I wouldn’t be interested in any other parties if they were to come in for me. I wanted to be a Schalke player no matter what. FC Schalke 04 is one of Germany’s biggest clubs, even if last season didn’t go to plan on the pitch. I want to be part of a successful side next season and am delighted that the transfer was able to go through successfully. It took some time but eventually I’m now able to join in the first few weeks of pre-season training.

… his position:

I’m flexible across the frontline. In Düsseldorf, I played mostly off the left wing but have played on the right side before. Moreover, I’m happy to play in midfield or lead the line up front. Essentially, I’m happy to play any role which the head coach has in mind and where I can use my qualities for the benefit of the team. One of my greatest strengths is my speed. Even if I don’t have the ball at my feet, I can create spaces for teammates through my pace and movement.

… his aims with the team

The year just gone wasn’t the best in the club’s history but I see a great amount of potential in our team. I’m convinced that we’ll have a good season. Schalke have played in Europe almost every season in the past 10 years. I want that to be the case once more.

… the Schalke fans

I like the Schalke fans as they are absolutely crazy like I am! I can guarantee that I will give everything and throw myself into every game. I hope that the fans will appreciate that.

Benito Raman

… blue and white on a very special day:

I got married a few weeks ago. When my wife gave me the go ahead, I wore a blue suit. Of course, she was in white – so it was a blue and white wedding.

… his shirt number:

The number nine shirt was free and I wore it in Düsseldorf too. Therefore, I decided to pick the number nine to wear here at Schalke too.

… Belgian predecessors at Schalke:

In the past, a few memorable players from my homeland have donned the Schalke shirt. Marc Wilmots and Emile Mpenza were fans’ favourites. My goal is to step into their shoes and continue the strong Belgian tradition at Schalke.

… the aim of playing in the national team:

A few years ago, I played for the U21 team but haven’t made an appearance for the senior side yet. Twice, I have been close to a nomination but not been part of the final squad. The competition in attacking areas in strong to say the least. With good performances at Schalke, I’d like to keep making the national team manager take note of me so I can fulfil my dream of representing my country on the international stage.
