“It doesn’t get much better than that” – reaction to Benedikt Höwedes’ successful career

Benedikt Höwedes has announced his retirement. Following the news, schalke04.de reached out to his youth coach Norbert Elgert, S04 sporting director Jochen Schneider and former teammate Gerald Asamoah for their reactions and thoughts on the World Cup winner’s extraordinary career.

Norbert Elgert

Norbert Elgert:

Benni is a Knappenschmiede kid. He made the jump to the first team from the U19s and did a great job captaining the team for a long time. He won several titles auf Schalke, in Italy and in Russia. The highlight of his career was, of course, winning the World Cup in 2014 where he was a key figure for the team. It doesn’t get much better than that. What defined him as a player were his leadership skills, his exceptional team spirit and his desire to win. He has mastered the art of defending. As a person, Benni is top-notch – he is dependable, has integrity and strong morals. He is and was Schalke to the bone. I wish him all the best. Regardless of what he goes on to do next, I wish him nothing but success. I hope that he will return home to us at some point.

Jochen Schneider

Jochen Schneider:

Benedikt Höwedes can look back on his career with pride. He achieved big things both with the German national team and with Schalke, winning titles along the way. His performances and his conduct both on and off the pitch ensure that he will forever occupy a special spot in the history of Schalke 04. We wish him all the best in his retirement.

Gerald Asamoah:

Bene was young when he joined the club and always got on very well with everyone else. I spent a lot of time with him and we are still in touch today. I’m happy that he was able to end his career on his own terms. I wish him all the best for the future.
