Emotional scenes as Huub Stevens bids farewell

Shortly after FC Schalke 04’s members’ meeting began on Saturday, there was a huge cheer inside the VELTINS-Arena as the Royal Blues bid farewell to departing supervisory board member Huub Stevens.

Chairman of the supervisory board Dr. Jens Buchta, who has also chosen to step down from the board, thanked the Dutchman for his work and highlighted Stevens’ incredible service to the club during his speech: “Thank you for your dedication and thank you for your commitment to Schalke 04,” said Dr. Buchta. “Your name will always have a special connection to our club.”

During the speech, the members present rose from their seats to honour Schalke’s Coach of the Century with a minute-long standing ovation. The well-known Eurofighters song “Wir schlugen Roda, wir schlugen Trabzon…” (We beat Roda, we beat Trabzon) also rang out in the stadium as a reminder of that 1997 UEFA Cup triumph under the now 67-year-old.

Like so many others, for me it’s a case of ‘Once a Schalker, always a Schalker’. Schalke 04 will always be my club.

Schalke 04 will always be my club,” said Stevens, who is stepping down to spend more time with his family.

Dr. Buchta and the members also thanked Ingolf Müller for his work, as he too is stepping down from the supervisory board.
