The first Livestream across multiple platforms in China sets a record

On May 16th 2020, the Bundesliga became the first League to resume among the five major European Leagues after being paused for more than two months. The first match was the renowned “Revierderby”. It was a memorable day for every football fan around the world. Finally, football is back. To Schalke fans, that meant even more since it was the “Revierderby”.

Official livestream from Shanghai Office

Millions of football fans around the world paid attention to this unusual “Revierderby”. In China, Schalke fans were eager to gather and cheer for their beloved team. Therefore, a special offline party was launched by our official China Office. Fans got together and warmed up two hours before kick-off, expressing their passion and love for the club. Due to the health safety concern, only 15 Schalke fans were invited to our office to join in the live streaming party. Various activities took place during the live stream such as German lessons, singing the club’s anthem and a Q&A for Schalke knowledge.

A couple coming from Nanjing shared their special experience as medical staff during the outbreak period. The spirit of the Royal Blues always motivated them in their daily life. Both online and offline fans had a deeper understanding on Schalke’s tradition and unique culture, as well as the social responsibility that club took during the special timing.

Unprecedented: Start a New Chapter of Fan Interaction

The event was live streamed on three major platforms (Weibo, Douyin and Douyu), which made Schalke become the first European club to do so in the Chinese market. The one-and-a-half-hour-long livestream was extremely popular, reaching over a total of 15 Million viewers. In addition, the campaign on Schalke’s social media platforms in China received more than 2.6 Million viewers.

PP Sports Studio Live Connection

The emotional connection between the fans and the club was enhanced. The Royal Blue fans ‘spirit and passion were displayed to the Chinese audiences through the live connection with PP Sports, the official broadcaster of the Bundesliga in China. The total viewership of the live broadcast for the “Ruhr-Derby” reached 1.92 Million, which broke the record of PP Sports for a single Bundesliga match.
