Goncalo Paciencia: I want to score goals and help the team

FC Schalke 04 completed the signing of attacker Goncalo Paciencia a few days ago. The Portuguese has been signed on a one-year loan from Eintracht Frankfurt that includes an option to buy. In a digital press conference on Wednesday, the 26-year-old spoke about his first impressions of Schalke, his aims, and his good talks with David Wagner.

Goncalo Paciencia on…

… his new club:
FC Schalke 04 is a big club, one of the biggest in German football. It’s got a fantastic stadium, amazing fans, and a long history. Things haven’t been going the club’s way on the pitch over the last two seasons though. My biggest aim is to contribute to making sure this season is more successful for Schalke, so I want to become an important part of the team as soon as possible. Obviously my main task as a striker is to score goals – that’s what I’ve been brought in to do. In order to be successful though, the most important thing is to work hard every day, and that’s what I’m going to do!

… good talks with David Wagner:
From the first minute, the coach gave me the feeling that he wants to work with me and that I’m a part of his plans for this season. I want to repay this trust in me with good performances. I’m approaching this new challenge at Schalke with a lot of enthusiasm and ambition.

… his new teammates:
The team have made me feel really welcome and I feel immediately at home here. Most of the boys here weren’t strangers to me, as I know them from past Bundesliga matches. I’m very pleased to be here at Schalke!

… the opening defeat in Munich:
The game did not go as planned for us at all, but unfortunately you have days like that in football. What’s important after a game like that is that you pick yourselves afterwards. So much of football is in the mind. I’m someone who always thinks positive – it doesn’t do any good to dwell on the past. We’ve got to be optimistic for the future. I’m absolutely convinced that we’ll perform better in the games coming up and get some good results.

… the upcoming game at home to Werder Bremen:
SV Werder also had a difficult time last season – they only managed to stay up through the Bundesliga play-off. But that’s all in the past now. I’m expecting a hard-fought match in the VELTINS-Arena. As a team, we have to give it everything we’ve got – we’ve got to fight harder and run further than our opponents. My personal goal is to score one more than Werder.
