Hard work ahead in Austria – S04 travel to Mittersill

The Royal Blues start the final part of their pre-season with a nine-day training camp in Mittersill, Austria. The camp will look to build further foundations and work on implementing various playing concepts ahead of the start of the competitive season in just two weeks’ time.

Schalke travel to the High Tauern national park for the fourth time in a row to prepare for the upcoming season in optimal mountainous conditions. The Royal Blues will again stay in the Hotel Schloss Mittersill, while the numerous training session will take place at local side SC Mittersill.

S04 will play three friendlies alongside their training sessions. On Monday 29th, FC Bologna will face Schalke in Kitzbühel at 18:00 CEST. Four days later, the Royal Blues will compete in a double-header of friendlies when they play Alanyaspor at 14:00 CEST and Villarreal at 18:00 CEST.

Weston McKennie returns

Weston McKennie will join up with the squad to travel to the camp. The US international player recently reached the final of the Gold Cup and was allowed an extended break. “I’m convinced that we’ll integrate him quickly and be able to get him on board with our ideas,” said coach David Wagner, thrilled at being able to work together with the 21-year-old.

Those currently sidelined should make a step to returning to full team training during the camp. “I’m hopeful that they can consistently take part in training in Mittersill and get their first minutes of the season,” said Wagner, referring to Daniel Caligiuri, Alessandro Schöpf and Mark Uth, who have only trained individually thus far. “They’ve been out of action for a while. That means we’ve got to monitor everyone’s load individually,” added Wagner. Meanwhile, Rabbi Matondo should return in a few days after injuring his foot in the friendly with FC Twente.
