Jochen Schneider clarifies current situation with Alexander Nübel

Alexander Nübel has joined back up with the squad after winning a silver medal at the recent U21 European Championship in Italy and San Marino. The keeper will be a part of Schalke’s goalkeeping roster for the coming season along with fellow teammates Michael Langer and Markus Schubert.

It’s not currently certain whether Nübel will be a Schalke player past 30th June 2020. “Nothing has changed,” explains Jochen Schneider. At the same time, the Schalke sporting director emphasises that the club has great interest in extending Nübel’s contract in the coming summer.

At some point you have to make a decision and then move on.

According to Schneider, a decision will be made soon on the goalkeeper’s future. “There isn’t a set date, but we have agreed that we want to get it sorted out relatively quickly,” explained the sporting director, who is keen to avoid speculation over the course of the season. “It is always an issue and causes a distraction. At some point you have to make a decision and then move on. It’s just like in one’s private life,” said Schneider.

The 48-year-old has ruled out a sale in the current transfer window. “We have our own objectives, and Alex did brilliantly in the Rückrunde,” said Schneider, indicating that losing the goalkeeper now would be the wrong decision.
