Jonjoe Kenny nominated for Rookie of the Season

The German Football League (DFL) has been running the “Rookie of the Season” award after Matchday 34 of every season since 2016/17. Amine Harit was able to win the award two years ago, and Ozan Kabak won it last year – when he was still a VfB Stuttgart player. This time, there is another Schalke player in the running, as Jonjoe Kenny is one of the five candidates for the award.

The English right-back’s competition for the award are Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Marcus Thuram (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Ismail Jakobs, (Cologne) and Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich). The five youngsters were nominated by the DFL, as each of them has been named “Rookie of the Month” at least once this season. Jonjoe Kenny won the award in August of 2019.

There are various criteria for a player to count as a Rookie. He must be younger than 23 on Matchday 1, and must have never been in a Bundesliga starting XI in the years prior. In addition, he must have played up to a maximum of 450 Bundesliga minutes. That means that only players who have made a few appearances in their careers have a chance at being nominated.
