Jonjoe Kenny wins August Rookie of the Month award

An individual honour for Jonjoe Kenny: the right-back has won August’s Rookie of the Month award, after impressing during his first three Bundesliga matches and topping it all off with a goal against Hertha. The 22-year-old Englishman was up against Wolfsburg’s Xaver Schlager and Augsburg’s Ruben Vargas. The trio were nominated by the DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH) for their performances during the opening month of the season.

The nominees for the award are selected based on the number of points they pick up on each matchday that month as part of the official Bundesliga Fantasy Manager. The fans then also have a chance to vote for their favourite. In addition to fans in Germany, both the clubs as well as a selection of Bundesliga experts are able to vote for the Rookie of the Month.

There are various criteria that have to be met in order to be eligible to be nominated as a Rookie. The nominee must be younger than 23 years of age at the time of the first matchday of the season and must not have appeared in a Bundesliga starting line-up in previous seasons. Additionally, the player cannot have played more than 450 minutes during any previous appearances as a substitute in the German top flight.

At the end of the season, all of the monthly winners compete to be named “Rookie of the Season.” Two years ago, Schalke’s Amine Harit was able to take home this title at the end of the season.
