Peter Knäbel: Our ideal candidate

Board member for sport Peter Knäbel shared his enthusiasm towards the club’s new head coach in this afternoon’s press conference. “Karel Geraerts was our ideal candidate, so we're really pleased to have secured his services. We knew from the moment we first met him that he would fulfil the criteria that we had drawn up for Schalke’s new head coach."

Knäbel believes that the Belgian will endeavour to develop the young players and guide the team into playing successful, dynamic and aesthetically pleasing football, things that are core values of the club’s academy, the Knappenschmiede. The board member is certain that the 41-year-old head coach has the necessary drive for the role: “It’s possible to develop the younger members of the squad whilst producing successful performances; Karel proved that during his time with Union Saint-Gilloise.”

The club’s current position was discussed during conversations with Karel Geraerts: “The potential he’s shown as a coach and his knowledge of the modern game prove that he will be able to deal with the situation and get the club back on track.” This will be the main focus over the coming weeks.

As an experienced player and coach, the former Belgium international has the necessary vision and open-mindedness “to become a great asset to the club, which I’m personally really excited about,” shared Knäbel.
