Schalke 04 training camp in Belek cancelled

FC Schalke 04 have decided not to travel to the planned training camp in Belek, Turkey. The decision was taken following discussions with the medical department as well as correspondence with the relevant authorities with consideration given to the current coronavirus situation and especially the growing spread of the Omicron variant.

The journey to Turkey had been set to take place on the 3rd January, 2022. The team was due to spend a good six days in Belek getting ready for the 16 games left to play in the Bundesliga 2 this season. After internal discussions, the decision has now been made to cancel the training camp.

“From a sporting point of view, this is not a decision that was taken lightly because we would have used the time together to prepare for the remaining games with a laser focus,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “In recent days, however, we had to come to terms with the fact that the risks associated with the journey had clearly risen and have now eclipsed the possible benefits. We have to fulfil our responsibility with regards to all those who work with the team.”

Winter training to take place at Berger Feld

Club employees, especially club doctor and coronavirus expert Dr. Patrick Ingelfinger, were in contact with the relevant authorities. The result of the exchange was a fresh consideration of the benefits and risks taken in the last 24 hours, the result of which was the decision to cancel the camp.

“Our squad is almost 100% fully vaccinated and boosted – an important sign, but still not a ‘get out of jail free’ card, especially given the Omicron variant. We want to keep the risk of infection for players, staff and other colleagues as low as possible. Therefore, we have decided to cancel the trip,” explained sporting director Peter Knäbel. Preparations before the season restarts will continue, as discussed, at the Berger Feld.

The club asks for understanding from those fans who booked trips to Belek in order to support the team regarding this short notice but necessary cancellation.

Terodde and Itakura test positive

In addition, two Royal Blues have tested positive for Covid-19. Simon Terodde (who is already recovered and fully vaccinated) and Ko Itakura (fully vaccinated with a booster) have tested positive in the last few days and are now in isolation. It is not yet known when they will be able to leave isolation, but luckily both players are not experiencing symptoms. FC Schalke 04 wishes Simon and Ko a swift and full recovery!
