Schalke and the "Year of German-American Friendship"

Founded in 1951 and now proudly operating 159 institutes around the world, the Goethe Institute is Germany’s cultural institution, promoting the study of the language and encouraging international cultural exchanges. From October 2018 throughout the entirety of 2019, the institute turned its focus in the United States towards the "Year of German-American Friendship" program.

The program was “focused on our robust relationship, rooted in deep historic ties, shared values, and bold visions for the future”. Schalke 04 was a proud partner at numerous stages during this initiative, supporting in a variety of manners:

Wunderbar Together Breakfast in Atlanta

Together with the Bundesliga, Schalke made its way down south to the Peach State with raffle items and giveaways galore in September 2019 for a breakfast viewing party of the team’s match against RB Leipzig. A great time was had by all – especially with our 3-1 victory – and U.S. Men’s National Team teammates Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie held a question and answer session postgame.

“The cooperation with FC Schalke was just amazing – it was great to see, how enthusiastic the fans – young and old – responded to the various contact opportunities with Schalke,” said Christoph Mücher, “Projektleiter Deutschlandjahr” for Wunderbar Together.

Bundesliga Total

For two straight years, Schalke has been proud to participate in Goethe’s Step into Bundesliga Total campaign, which pits schools from across North America in a Bundesliga quiz game that promotes studying German sporting culture. Last season, team “Tore R Us” prevailed in the final round in Washington, D.C., winning a trip to Schalke they will never forget.

In the spirit of togetherness and collaboration that Goethe promotes so proudly, both organizations have made it a sticking point to utilize their digital resources across many platforms, including social media, to recognize each other’s efforts. Specifically, Schalke has proudly given recognition to participants in our Bundesliga Total quiz group, sending them some extra special swag as an additional thank you!

Finally, the club’s efforts will be featured in a review book being produced by the institute to celebrate all of their 450 partners efforts in making their “Year of German-American Friendship” a smashing success. Schalke would like to thank its partners at the Goethe Institute for not only including the Royal Blues in their efforts this past year, but also for their constant work in bringing German and American cultures together in positive exchanges both at home and in America.

While this season’s final round and trip to Germany are cancelled due to COVID-19, Schalke were sure to send a team autographed jersey to the winning school – Delta Secondary School in Canada! Well done to team “Bundesligajäger”.
