Shakhtar Donetsk to host Bayern München at the VELTINS-Arena

Thursday’s Champions League draw, which took place at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, saw Shakhtar Donetsk’s opponents be decided. Alongside Bayern München, the Ukrainian champions will host last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta, Swiss champions Young Boys, and French side Stade Brest at the VELTINS-Arena.

The first Champions League season in its new format sees German record champions Bayern München travel to Gelsenkirchen. Under the guidance of new head coach Vincent Kompany, the Bavarians have set their sights on the final in their own home stadium.

For fans of the Royal Blues, an emotional reunion with Sead Kolasinac could be on the horizon. The Bosnian defender arrived at Schalke in 2011, winning the German U19 Championship under coach Norbert Elgert in his first campaign. Last season, he won the Europa League title with Atalanta. In total, Kolasinac played 141 competitive matches for FC Schalke 04. The remaining sides to visit Gelsenkirchen will be Young Boys and Stade Brest, the new club of ex-Mainz striker Ludovic Ajorque. The away fixtures for Shakhtar will consist of trips to Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, PSV Eindhoven and Bologna.

The knockout rounds will stick to the standard tournament tree format, made up of one home and one away leg for each side. The final will take place in the Allianz Arena on 31st May 2025.
