Alongside Schalke’s number 2, the candidates are: Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Tim Ream (Fulham) and Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew). The winner will be announced in the second week of December. Last year, Fortuna Düsseldorf shot-stopper Zak Steffen won the award.

McKennie has a successful year with the US national team behind him. At the Gold Cup, the 21-year-old helped his side pick up silver, only falling short of the championship title in the final against Mexico, where Weston wore the captain’s armband.

The midfield man also made history during a recent international break, scoring the fastest ever USMNT hat-trick in the CONCAF Nations League game against Cuba.
