Great news for FC Schalke 04 and Gelsenkirchen as the VELTINS- Arena has been included as one of the ten stadia in the Germany football association’s (DFB) application to host EURO 2024. The ground has been chosen from a pool of 14 applicants as made aware by the DFB on Friday.

“We look forward to the VELTINS-Arena being part of Germany’s application for the 2024 European Championships. Our stadium is one of the best in Germany and that has been demonstrated once again by the stadium’s selection”, said Peter Peters, finance director at Schalke. ”Now we have to hope of course that the European Championships will be held in Germany so that we’ll be able to see thousands of fans from around Europe in Gelsenkirchen.”

The city of Gelsenkirchen and FC Schalke 04 with the VELTINS-Arena entered the running alongside one another. As well as Gelsenkirchen, the following cities were also successful: Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Köln, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.

In September 2018, UEFA will make its decision regarding who shall host EURO 2024. The VELTINS-Arena has already hosted numerous large sporting events such as the 2004 Champions League final as well as three group stage matches and a quarter final in the 2006 World Cup.
