Džeko and Katic bow out of the World Cup against the USA
An exciting journey has come to an end: Edin Džeko and Nikola Katic were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup in the round of 32 as Bosnia and Herzegovina suffered a 2-0 defeat to hosts USA.
Bosnia and Herzegovina held firm for an entire first half against sustained American pressure, but just before the break, Folarin Balogun gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in front of a sell-out crowd of 68,827 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. Balogun was sent off for a foul in the 64th minute, but Sergej Barbarez’s side were unable to make their numerical advantage count during the final half hour. Malik Tillman sealed the USA’s place in the last 16 with their second goal in the 82nd minute.
Edin Džeko and Nikola Katic both started the match but were substituted during the second half. Captain Džeko, who picked up a knock, was replaced by Ermin Mahmic after 51 minutes, while Katic made way for Amar Memic in the 75th minute.
